I normally don’t go on a huge rants, or text posts on Tumblr, as I mainly use this as my stream of consciousness inspiration feed. I feel like this is the right place to post this, though, as it’s informal, and can get some traffic, so here we go. I posted about this a while back on my actual blog, but got a barrage of emails arguing that it was not actually a rip-off so I took it down. People were suggesting that it wasn’t even inspired by my artwork and that the nature of making creative work is such: There are only so many ideas to pull from, and eventually, the same ideas cross paths and will form coincidental or derivative similarities between two completely separate outputs.
I am willing to give this artist the benefit of the doubt, and say that this may have happened here. Sure. Fair enough. An animal in a space suit, posing for a pre-mission launch photo is bound to happen more than once. Heck, it could’ve maybe even happen again in a few years if the Klaxons weren’t a huge band. But what gets my blood boiling in this situation, is how I keep reading about how this cover is the end-all of album art; how it’s amazing and how it’s completely revolutionary. All the blogs that are posting it are hyping it up so hard… while my cover art, on the other hand, has been idly sitting on my website since 2007, and no one’s touted a peep about it. So, for the record, I’m putting this comparison back online and allowing other people to freely compare them. Whether they say, “Wow, huge rip off!” or “Wow, what an incredible coincidence,” is completely up to them, and I am in no way influencing that decision.
